Bat populations have undergone a 70% decline over the past century due to environmental factors such as habitat loss. ½ of the UK’s native species are on the IUCN red list of threatened species. Ancient woodlands that contain mature trees that bats roost in continue to be destroyed.

FLEX is a flexible bat home inspired by fungi that uses kerfing to flex around a tree’s surface. Covering the south westerly to south easterly aspect of a tree, the home heats up at varying rates along its length, creating a host of microclimates for the bats to choose from.

Primarily sold to woodland trusts, FLEX is installed on trees and buildings to combat the effects of ancient woodland losses on bats by providing them with new homes in young and old woodlands alike. Its sculptural form is intended to catch the public eye and boost engagement with the issues bats face.
