Annabel Eastwood

The principle of this project was to design a community learning centre at the heart of Castle Park, Bristol. Initially thought of as a ‘bookless library’, the building encompasses multiple spaces for different types of study such as academic, performance and artistic. A central atrium brings a light and airy feel to the building, as well as making it feel at one with the surrounding park. It is constructed from a Glulam frame and a Modcell panelised system with thatched cassette cladding that acts as vertical solar shading. The design of Bristol Education Centre was heavily inspired by the use of natural materials in current climate of the construction industry, such as in the recently completed Enterprise Centre of the University of East Anglia.
