Social segregation and exclusion are still very much prevalent in today’s society. The need for social sustainability within communities plays a crucial part in tackling these issues. Music can be used as a tool to bridge those from different backgrounds, cultures, social classes and communities. Identifying and categorising music into ‘two worlds’ - the urban underground and the ‘refined’, creates a stark contrast of the two and therefore a division amongst the industry. Understanding music can be a universal language that triggered the concept of this scheme and hence drew inspiration for the title of this project - ‘Rethinking Regeneration through Rhythm’. Housing all genres of music in one school is the programme, but through the architecture the goal is to encourage integration and collaboration through layout and flexibility of spaces, accommodating all genres. The inevitable interaction between students who otherwise wouldn’t socially mix outside of this school creates an opportunity for social integration in the hope that it will impact the wider community.

This project responds to the problem of waste in our cities, and how it can be reduced by promoting a culture of reuse.

In order to encourage reuse, it is important to raise awareness about waste and where it goes, while providing opportunities for upcycling. The R Shed gives the local community the opportunity to collectively make a contribution towards turning Bristol into a Zero Waste City.

Starting with the facilities to collect useful materials and turn them into new items, the space enables novices to gain skills in wood and metalwork, and a platform to showcase and sell their produce.

The function of the space is reflected in its materiality; using natural or reclaimed materials that are designed for deconstruction. Inspiring interior spaces with visual connections between stages of production encourages innovation, and an outdoor connection to nature provides a grounding to the core intentions of the space.
