Lawrence Hill Health and Lifestyle Centre offers a new approach to health, focusing on prevention rather than cure. Theories of Biophilic design and Active design have informed the architectural language and work together to help the community live healthier lifestyles. The centre's high street location, at the intersection of four sustainable transport routes (pedestrian, bus, train, and cycling), makes it a connected community hub. Some of the facilities in the mixed-used development include: the food market, community gym, and health information centre. The courtyard arrangement creates quality outdoor space with uninterrupted circulation promoting active lifestyles. Proportions of the development respond to the neighbouring high-street buildings. Materiality is reminiscent of the site's rich industrial past; brick, copper, and zinc create warm, contemporary facades. Lawrence Hill Health and Lifestyle Centre is an example of how Architecture can help improve Public Health and highlights the professional duty of Architects to design healthier places.
